Each approach presents unique strengths and challenges, and no single approach is universally adaptable to every situation. Different theories can be used simultaneously to examine individual and family systems from different perspectives.

Assessment Preparation

Imagine you are preparing for a case consultation with your clinical supervisor regarding Chris and his family. After reviewing your completed ecomap, your supervisor asks you to apply a specific social work theory to interpret the family’s functioning and prepare recommendations for your next session. You are expected to explain how theory shapes your assessment decisions and guides practical, strengths-based intervention planning.

Part 1: Theory-Based Case Analysis

Select one of the following theoretical perspectives to use in your analysis of the family:

Person-in-Environment Theory
This theory is used to examine external factors in the client’s environment that may be contributing to a problem, such as relationships, income or financial strain, race, family dynamics, level of education, etc. (Green & McDermott, 2010).

Systems Theory
This theory is used to examine a holistic view of the client and the challenges they are experiencing within a complex system, including their families, communities, and society from a broader context (Sexton & Stanton, 2016).

Ecological Theory
This theory is used to examine the bigger picture of how the client’s environment influences their experience, including the client’s exposure to familial, social, economic, and cultural factors (Pardeck, 1988).

Using your selected theoretical perspective, assess each family member in the ecomap. Consider developmental and cultural factors in your analysis for each individual.

Write a 175- to 350-word analysis of the case. Include the following:

  • Explain the family’s dynamics, issues, and relationships through the lens of your chosen theory, referencing key individuals and systems shown in your ecomap.
  • Apply core concepts from the theory to interpret family roles, stressors, and strengths, using examples from the case study.
  • Analyze developmental, cultural, and contextual influences affecting the family.
  • Distinguish between individual challenges and structural or systemic barriers influencing the family’s situation.

Part 2: Recommendations and Supervision Reflection

Write a 350- to 525-word reflection to brief your supervisor prior to your next session. Include the following:

  • Summarize key positive and negative system influences in the family system, identifying the family’s priority needs based on your theoretical analysis.
  • Provide at least three recommendations you might make to the family in your next session that:
    • Address identified needs,
    • Align clearly with your chosen theory, and
    • Are realistic and appropriate for the next phase of intervention.
  • Identify at least two areas where you seek supervisory feedback, reflecting on how your theoretical lens may shape or limit your assessment.
  • Describe how supervision can strengthen your clinical judgment and cultural responsiveness.

Additional Requirements

  • Cite at least two peer-reviewed or scholarly references.
  • Format all citations and references according to APA guidelines.
  • Submit your assessment.
